14 Mosquito Samples Found Carrying West Nile Virus

Fourteen new mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans, were collected between July 16 and July 22, from Dix Hills, Nesconset, North Babylon, and Huntington, Huntington Station,  Rocky Point, Holbrook,  North Patchogue  and Setauket.

To date, the county has confirmed 23 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile Virus. To date, there are no human cases.

West Nile virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and again each year thereafter, is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. No humans or horses have tested positive for West Nile virus in Suffolk this year.
