2 Dix Hills Brothers Among Missing in Condo Building Collapse

Two brothers who grew up in Dix Hills area among those reported missing in the condo collapse in Surfside, Fla.

Rabbi Yakov Saacks of the Chai Center in Dix Hills said that Drs. Brad Cohen and his brother, Gary, who was visiting him, haven’t been accounted for. Saacks said he officiated at the wedding of Brad and his wife, Soriya.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to those missing and their families after the collapse of the building in Surfside,” Saacks said. “May God have compassion.”

Rick Karle, a journalist at WVTM 13  television station in Alabama, posted on Facebook, “Let’s all take a moment to pray for Tuscaloosa’s Dr. Gary Cohen and his brother Dr. Brad Cohen, who are missing in Surfside, Florida following last week’s condo collapse.

“Dr. Gary, who has worked for years at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, traveled to South Florida days ago to be with his terminally ill father. The brothers were seen the day before the collapse but as I write this post, have not been seen since.
“John Merkle, the director of the VA Medical Center has released this statement to the media:
“Dr. Gary Cohen is one of our physicians and has worked many years providing care to our Veterans. He is part of the Tuscaloosa VAMC family and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this incredibly difficult time.
“I know that you will be thinking of the Cohens, along with all of those families who are dealing with so much pain.”
As of Tuesday evening, 12 have been confirmed dead; another 149 thought to have been in the building when it collapsed are listed as unaccounted for. The 12-story building collapsed early Thursday morning.
