Three people are running for two open seats on the Northport-East Northport Board of Education, including incumbents Donna McNaughton and David Bandanes.
Parent Amanda Cascio is also challenging for a seat, advocating for armed security at schools and opposing the proposed budget of $183,038,428, saying more transparency is needed. Badanes has been on the board since 2012; McNaughton previously served as vice president of the board, and as PTA presidents at three Northport schools.
The proposed budget represents a 2.9 percent increase over the current budget, and a 1.9 percent tax increase. The budget relies on a transfer from reserves to keep the increase below 2 percent. See the budget proposal and candidate newsletter links below.
The next board will be working with a new superintendent since Robert Banzer announced in January that he will be retiring after eight years at the helm.
The election and budget vote are scheduled May 16; see the district website for more information.
