5k Run, Park Service on Sunday to Remember Those Lost on 9/11

Huntington residents lost in the terror attacks on Sept.11, 2001 will be remembered at events starting Sunday.

The local 9/11 Heroes Run, part of a series of more than 50 runs around the world and sponsored by the Travis Manion Foundation, has a fun run/walk at 9 a.m. and the 5k run at 9:30 a.m. Manion, a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps, was killed April 29, 2007 when he,  fellow Marines and Iraqi Army counterparts were ambushed while searching a suspected insurgent house in the Al Anbar province of Iraq.  Manion was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper while aiding and drawing fire away from wounded teammates.

The races attract runners of a wide variety of skills, from walkers to those who run with filled rucksacks or in firefighter or other first-responder uniforms.

The Town of Huntington invites the public to a service at noon Sunday at the 9/11 Memorial in Heckscher Park.  For more information, contact Carol Rocco, Veterans Affairs: (631) 351-3012 or [email protected]
