5th State Senate District: Incumbent Jim Gaughran

 

5th New York State Senate

Incumbent Jim Gaughran, a Democrat, was first elected to the State Senate in 2018, ousting the long-serving Republican Carl Marcellino. He has been in public office most of his adult life,  serving  on the Huntington Town Board  from 1984-1987, then the Suffolk County Legislature representing the 17th District, from 1988 through 1993. In the State Senate, he serves as chair of the Local Government committee and is a member of the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business, Women’s Issue, Higher Education and Racing, Gaming and Wagering committees.

He is running against Huntington Town Councilman Edmund J. M. Smyth, endorsed by the Republican, Conservative and Independence  parties, and Barbara Wagner of the Green Party.
