Activists Rally to Support Climate Bills

Climate change activists took their message to several Long Island legislators on Wednesday, including U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-Huntington.

About a dozen activists bearing signs called for the passage of climate bills, the New York Climate and Community Investment Act and the federal Thrive Agenda (Transform, Heal, and Renew by Investing in a Vibrant Economy), which Suozzi supports.

The congressman told the group,  “We’re going to do things we’ve talked about for years and years and years.”

“Today, people on Long Island and across the country made their voices heard. Now is the time
for a bold investment to address climate change while creating good paying jobs for the future,” he said. Suozzi also talked about his push to lift the limits on the state and local tax (SALT) deduction.

Michael Brady of the Long Island Progressive Coalition said, “You don’t have to look far to see the effects of climate change — ever stronger and more frequent tropical storms, consecutive years of record setting temperatures, and drought plagued farming seasons just to name a few. New York took bold action two years ago by passing the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, and the nation seems ready to follow our lead in transitioning to zero carbon energy in a way that prioritizes disadvantaged and front-line communities that have suffered the most. Now it’s time to fund these promises by passing the Climate and Community Investment Act in NY and pushing the THRIVE agenda forward in Congress.”

More than 50 organizations participated in the rallies, which also were held at Assemblyman Steve Englebright’s office in East Setauket; the office of State. Sen Todd Kaminsky, chair of Environmental Conservation Committee, in Rockville Centre; and outside U.S. Rep Kathleen Rice’s office in Garden City.
