A plan to extend the steeple at Centerport United Methodist Church to accommodate new antennas is on Thursday’s Zoning Board of Appeals agenda.
In a letter to Centerport Harbor Civic Association, church representatives wrote that it had accepted the 4G wireless proposal from Shore 2 Shore Wireless, noting that another antenna has been in the same space since 2003, that it would not be visible to passersby and that the project will strengthen the bell cupola, which is in disrepair. The steeple would grow from 70 feet to 98 feet in height. The church letter notes its responsibilities to carrying out its ministries as well as is obligation to taking care of the church building.
Some opponents have expressed concerns about possible hazards presented by more radio frequencies in the neighborhood as well as the aesthetics of the technology.
The church, a former school building, is at 97 Centershore Road, Centerport.
The ZBA meets at 6 p.m. in Town Hall.
