Arts: Tango, Memories With Music

There are lots of arts and entertainment opportunities around Huntington this week. Here are a few.

What: Huntington Public Library Presents “Anastasia René Band”
Where: Huntington Public Library
When: Friday, August 24th, 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
About: Vocalist and educator Anastasia René works in myriad genres, recording and performing with local and regional jazz, rock, folk, R&B, reggae and funk bands, as well as performing internationally with her own jazz quartet. Her current band includes Anastasia/vocals, Norm Pors/keyboards, Seth Mann/bass, and Jonathan Mele/drums. Anastasia has toured with Charles Neville (The Neville Brothers), Vince Welnick (The Tubes, Grateful Dead, Todd Rundgren), Percy Hill, and The Assembly of Dust. She has worked with Buzzy Linhart, The Zen Tricksters, Gent Treadly, Half Step, Reflections and Joe Gallant’s Illuminati. She appeared with Kenwood Dennard & Tim Palmieri at New York City’s Iridium Jazz Club and with The Gregg Allman Band at City Winery in 2016.

What: Art League of Long Island’s Instructors Exhibition
Where: Art League of Long Island, Dix Hills
When: Saturday, August 25th- September 15th
About: Works created by the Art League’s talented instructors are on display, exhibiting a wide range of works in painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry making, printmaking, photography, and mixed media. Reception and Open House on August 25 from 11am to 3pm features live demos by art instructors; event is free and open to the public.

What: Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum Presents Tango in the Courtyard
Where: The Vanderbilt Museum, Centerport
When: Saturday. August 25th at 5 p.m. – 10 p.m.
About: Music and tango dancing in the beautiful Spanish-Revival courtyard of the Vanderbilt Mansion. Early ticket purchase highly recommended, as availability is limited.

Where: Haven Gallery, Northport
When: August 11th – September 15th
About: A group exhibition of new paintings, drawings and sculptures that focuses on notable women of power, transcending the benevolent and philanthropic to the malevolent and murderous. A look back on women of history whose reigns had a strong impact on concurrent and contemporaneous times.

What: Making Memories with Music
Where: Cinema Arts Centre, Huntington
When: Monday, August 27th at 11 a.m.
About: Special Event for people with dementia and their care partners. Making Memories with Music welcomes The Jazz Loft Trio featuring Tom Manuel on cornet and vocals, Steve Salerno on guitar and Keenan Zach on double bass to the Cinema! The trio will stomp and romp through classics of the Great American Songbook promising to be a memorable event celebrating the American born art form of JAZZ.
