BAPS Hindu Temple Hosting Diwali Festival

Huntington residents will have the chance to celebrate Diwali next week at the BAPS Temple in Melville.

On Monday, the Indian New Year and Festival of Lights will be celebrated at 2 Deshon Drive with a full day of festivities. Diwali is the five-day festival of lights that is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world.

Coinciding with the Hindu New Year, Diwali celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness. The main celebration of the event (the Annakut Thaal) will begin at 12:30 p.m.

The Annakut festival is “a unique and awe-inspiring sight of devotion wherein numerous vegetarian food dishes are prepared by devotees and offered to the Mandir’s sacred images.” With plenty of events for children, community members can engage with spiritual and cultural themes, while bringing positive energy into the New Year.

Festivities are planned to end around 7 p.m. with dinner to follow and everyone is welcomed to learn about the culture, along with celebrating with the temple.
