Beaches Remain Closed Because of Bacteria

Several local beaches remain closed Sunday because of concerns about bacteria related to heavy rain, the Suffolk County Department of Health said.

The latest  Huntington beach to be closed is Gold Star Battalion beach. Fleets Cove Beach in Huntington and Centerport Yacht Club Beach in Centerport, which closed earlier Sunday, remain closed to bathing.

Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.

Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
