Biaggi Joins Race to Succeed Suozzi

State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, D-Pelham, announced Monday that she is running for the Third Congressional District seat.

The campaign to succeed US Rep. Tom Suozzi, who is running for governor, was announced less than a week after the State Legislature expanded the district into the Bronx and Westchester County. The district, which includes Huntington, now stretches along the North Shore from Nissequogue to Rye.

“I am running for Congress to protect and defend our democracy, to halt the climate crisis, to grow our supply of affordable housing, and to transform our government and economy to serve us all. Several of the most important fights in our country’s history are taking place in Washington right now, and I want to be on the frontlines,” her website reads.

She is jumping into an already crowded field of Democratic candidates hoping to succeed Suozzi, including Great Neck businessman and political activist Robert Zimmerman, Melanie D’Arrigo, who led a rally of progressive supporters Sunday in Huntington, small business owner Reema Rasool and Nassau Legislator Josh Lafazan.

Biaggi was first elected to the state Senate in 2019.
