Bicycle Recyclers Get Surprise Boost for Their Work

The Brett’s Bicycle Recycle crew got more than it bargained for when they went to pick up what was supposed to be a $500 matching gift for their charity. In fact, they got twice what they were expecting from Adams Cyclery.

The crew, Deborah Porretto and Lisa Karrer, was first awarded $500 by the Huntington Matters group on Facebook, which uses funds raised through advertising to support local organizations.

Then Adams Cyclery pledged to match the  $500 donation. But when the women turned up at the  bicycle shop Friday,  Denise and Chuck Adams surprised them by donating $1,000 worth of helmets and equipment for their repair of bicycles they then donate to residents.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of Denise and Chuck and so incredibly thankful to HMGB, Huntington Subaru and our community for helping us better serve those in need in the Town of Huntington,” Porretto said.

Their project to take donated bicycles, fix them up and give them away to those in need is named for Karrer’s brother, Brett, who was killed in a motorcycle accident a few years ago. They have given away hundreds of bicycles for free.

“This means so much to us,” Karrer said. “This incredible donation helps to keep my brother Brett’s memory alive. Now we can fix so many more bikes that we wouldn’t have been able to before. It will change so many lives in our community. Thank you all for believing in us and what we do.”
