The women behind a grassroots effort to provide bicycles to those in need plan to raise funds Saturday to continue their work and remember a treasured relative.
Brett’s Bicycle Recycle, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which accepts donated bikes and fixes them up to give away to those lacking wheels, invites residents to its fundraiser from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Bowlmor in Melville. Tickets are selling for $25 to $50.
Deborah Porretto and Lisa Karrer started the nonprofit after Lisa’s brother, Brett Rainey, was killed while riding his motorcycle in 2015.
To honor his legacy, the couple started the non-profit and have so far given away more than 300 bicycles.
Councilwoman Joan Cergol, who met with the two organizes during the Unity Day parade and fair in September, said, “I admire on many levels what they are doing at Brett’s Bicycle Recycling: being environmentally conscious by refurbishing bicycles, helping them find new homes with children who otherwise could not afford them, engaging neighborhood volunteers and businesses to assist in the effort and raising awareness about roadway safety. They are among the heroes of Huntington’s not-for-profit community that help make all our lives better.”
