Board Adding Names to 2 Streets

The Town Board voted Tuesday to rename two streets in Huntington.

Part of West 19th Street in Huntington Station will be renamed for the late saxophonist and teacher Pat DeRosa.

And a street named for a famous World War II admiral will add the name of a retired Army major general.

DeRosa, who died last year at the age of 101, held a spot in the Guiness Book of World Records, which in 2018 named him the world’s oldest professional saxophone player.

He taught in the public schools for many years, first in the Huntington district and later in South Huntington, retiring in 1978.

He also played with such musical legends as Glenn Miller and John Coltrane.

A portion of Nimitz Street, named for fleet admiral Chester Nimitz, will also carry the name of Army Maj. Gen. (ret.) Anthony R. Kropp.  Kropp, who led the original excavation for the town’s World War II Memorial, is a Huntington native who grew up on Nimitz Street. The Vietnam veteran went on to command the 416th theater engineer command, and served as chief of engineers at the Pentagon.

The West 19th Street renaming is scheduled for noon on June 21 at West 19th Street and 12th Avenue.
