Board Honors Brett’s Bicycle Recycle

The Huntington Town Board Tuesday honored the work of Brett’s Bicycle Recycle, a group that repairs and donates bicycles to members of the Huntington community.

Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said the group, founded and led by Lisa Karrer and Deborah Porretto, had donated more than 300 bicycles. The group is named for Lisa’s brother, Brett Rainey, who was killed in a motorcycle crash in 2015.

The couple are  looking for a truck to transport the repaired bicycles to events, as well as financial donations to help them carry out their work.

They can frequently be found at community events such as festivals, donating or raffling off their bikes for free. They also have repaired scooters, skateboards and tricycles. And they have trained recipients in bicycling safety and work with first responders to teach CPR.

“We thank you both for the big hearts that you have,” Cuthbertson said.

They have been chosen by Ann & Nancy Wilson of HEART to be a participating community nonprofit organization in the REVERB Action Village at the HEART/JOAN JETT show at Northwell Health at Jones Beach on Sept.26.
