Brighten Your Day: Pirates, Music Jam and the Easter Bunny

Had it with pandemics, polemics or politics? HuntingtonNow.com has a few ideas for things you can do this weekend to brighten your day and get away from the tsunami of negative news you and your kids may be experiencing.

IRISH PIRATES: In the name of women’s equality, kids can find out about pirates who were also women. The Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor is offering a look at Irish pirates, including Grace O’Malley.  Decorate a Jolly Roger, pirate hat and eye patch. Costumes welcome! $12 kid, $6 adult. Members 1/2 off. Saturday, 11-noon.

PI DAY:  Grades 2-5. Create a binary code necklace while enjoying a slice of pie. 11-11:45 a.m. at the Chestnut Hill school. Register in advance.

EASTER BUNNY PICS: Get your child’s photo taken with the Easter Bunny at Walt Whitman Shops. Schedule.

ACOUSTIC JAM: Saturday, 1 p.m., at the Northport Public Library.  Acoustic guitar and singing general jam, open to the public and is strictly a sing along and is not a performance group meeting or practice.  Free.

IRISH MUSIC: Music by the Mountain Maidens, 7 p.m. Saturday at the South Huntington Library. For library cardholders.

SYMPHONIC POPS: Symphonic Pops of Long Island in concert  at  2 p.m. Sunday.  Hear musical favorites including pieces from West Side Story, songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein, As Time Goes By, a Salute to the Big Bands and much more. The Pops will be joined in concert with The Huntington High  School String Orchestra, at the high school. www.symphonicpopsli.org

TASTE THE GREATS: Oheka Castle is hosting Taste the Greats, a celebration of chefs and great food. 8 p.m. Saturday.

ADULT WINTER WALK: If you’ve suddenly been forced to work at home instead of going into the office, and you need to get out with other adults, Caumsett has a winter water walk on Saturday, 9:45 a.m.-1 p.m. The goal is  leisurely observation of winter waterfowl and exploration of the beach, and learning about ponds. Registration required for a moderately paced 4 mile walk to and from the water, with a chance to relax and socialize. Bring binoculars.

LEPRECHAUN BAR CRAWL:  Hit several of Huntington’s bars with this tour Saturday starting at 2 p.m.  For 21 and up. Behave, though: The operator says it “reserves right to kick out anyone and cut off their wristband for excessive drunkenness, or rude or belligerent behavior.”
