Brookstone Store at Whitman Mall to Close

The Brookstone store at Walt Whitman Shops will close, as the company  filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday for the second time and plans to close all of its approximately 100 remaining mall stores.

Filled with tech-boosted items such as massage chairs, heated eye massagers, shoulder pillows, towel warmers, cat-eared headphones and many other quirky items, the stores had been struggling in recent years.

“Today we have taken several important steps to restructure the business and ensure that Brookstone will be well-positioned to succeed for years to come,” Brookstone CEO Piau Phang Foo said in a statement. “The decision to close our mall stores was difficult, but ultimately provides an opportunity to maintain our well-respected brand and award-winning products while operating with a smaller physical footprint.”

On the Whitman mall site, the store described itself “From the start Brookstone wanted to create a fun, interactive shopping experience. At our stores, customers are encouraged to try products out for true, hands-on shopping. Every visit to Brookstone is an opportunity to discover new and ingenious items of superior quality – all in a friendly environment of customer service and integrity that simply can’t be found anywhere else.”

Soon, it won’t be found at the mall, either, though there was no immediate information on its closing date.
