Cat Dies in Condo Fire

Forty firefighters  battled a blaze Tuesday morning at The Coves at Melville, a senior condo complex.

The blaze was confined to a rear bedroom, with smoke damage throughout the unit on Morley Circle.

Melville Fire Department Assistant Chiefs David Kaplan and Bill Schmitt were in command of the scene. Mutual aid assistance at the scene was provided by the Huntington Manor, East Farmingdale and Plainview fire departments. Standby crews from the Dix Hills and Farmingdale fire departments handled an ambulance call and a commercial automatic alarm during the incident. No human injuries were reported but a cat died in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Town of Huntington Fire Marshal.
