Celebration of Rosh Hashanah Underway

The Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah gets underway Sunday evening at sunset, and ends Tuesday evening. The New Year is marked by the sounding of the shofar, services and such foods as apples dipped in honey to symbolize the start of a sweet new year.

The day marks the start of the High Holy Days, culminating in Yom Kippur starting on the evening of Sept. 18, the most solemn day on the Jewish calendar.

Many public schools are closed Monday and Tuesday this week and again on Sept. 19.

This year’s holiday overlaps with Sept. 11 and  commemorations of the 2001 attack on the US.
