Groups to Place Flags at Local Cemeteries

More than a dozen local cemeteries, including Huntington Rural Cemetery, will allow the placement of American flags at gravestones on May 23.

The ceremonies are suspended at national cemeteries because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said the county will work with local Boy Scout Troops and veterans organizations to conduct the group flag placement at non-veteran cemeteries for Memorial Day.

“This plan demonstrates that we can safely conduct group flag placements to honor our Veterans while protecting the public health,” Bellone said. “We are hopeful that the VA will assist our efforts by donating flags that would otherwise be used for their suspended activities at national cemeteries.”
