Ceremony to Honor Officer Who Rescued Huntington Surfer

A surfer from Huntington who was rescued by an off-duty Suffolk police officer when she was injured will participate in a ceremony Friday honoring the officer.

Mia Imbesi, 24, was rescued July 28 at Gilgo Beach after she suffered a severe cut to her leg after diving into a wave. Office Greg Capobianco put the woman on her surfboard and brought her to shore. She needed 54 stitches at Good Samaritan Hospital.

The ceremony, set for 10 a.m. at the Timber Point Country Club in Great River, will also honor Marine Bureau and New York State Park Police officers who rescued two stranded kayakers on July 19.

Among those expected at the ceremony are Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart and Suffolk County Police Chief of Department Stuart Cameron.
