Cergol to Run for Town Board

Democrat Joan Cergol, an appointed member of the Huntington Town Board, announced Monday that she’ll run for election to fill a term left vacant by Susan Berland.

Cergol was appointed in December to Berland’s seat when the latter resigned after her election to the Suffolk County Legislature.

Cergol was appointed to the one-year term but must run for election for the remainder of Berland’s term.

In making her announcement, she talked about the value of diversity in Huntington and access to better information on the town’s website, citing her own role in sponsoring resolutions promoting the use of livestreaming of Town Board meetings.

Numerous Democratic luminaries attended her announcement at Black&Blue,  including former Suffolk County legislator Steve Stern, who is running for Assembly in a special election Tuesday, former U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, former Town Board member Tracey Edwards, Town Board member Mark Cuthbertson, Berland,  Suffolk County legislator William “Doc” Spencer and Suffolk County Water Authority chairman Jim Gaughran, who is running for State Senate.

Cergol previously served as director of the town’s Community Development Agency
