Collecting for a Good Cause

Volunteers spread out to Stop & Shop stores around Huntington on Saturday to collect donations of nonperishable food items for Island Harvest.

Stopping shoppers as they were entering stores, the volunteers asked them to drop off an item or two when they exited the stores. Many did, some delivering multiple items or cash.

NBC 4 New York, Telemundo 47, Stop & Shop and food banks sponsored the second annual Feeding Our Families drive.

The Long Island Community Foundation cites recent statistic that show that the two major food banks on Long Island, Island Harvest and LI Cares, provide emergency food for an estimated 316,000 Long Islanders every year.

Island Harvest also offers a virtual food drive.
