Coming Up: LIPA Case Resumes, Free Fishing Trip

Here’s a look at some of the events happening this week, from the resumption of the LIPA tax fight to cannon and the 1812 Overture at Heckscher Park as part of the Huntington summer arts festival.

Monday: The battle between the Town of Huntington and the Long Island Power Authority returns to court Monday in Riverhead. LIPA wants the town to cut its $82 million property tax bill by 90 percent, saying the Northport power plant is badly over-assessed. The town insists that the plant is worth every bit of its assessment. The anti-LIPA group Concerned Taxpayers Against LIPA, is encouraging its members to witness the case as it proceeds in the courtroom.

Tuesday: Kids who were selected by lottery will board the James Joseph II boat for a free fishing trip with fishing guidance provided by Suffolk County Senior Citizens Fishing Club, Imperial Sportsmen’s Club of Long Island, and Captain James Schneider.

Wednesday: Huntington Community Band performs at the summer arts festival at Heckscher Park, with the 1812 Overture, including cannon  starting at 8 p.m. For those with different musical tastes, the Wallflowers are playing at the Paramount at the same time.

Thursday: The Zoning Board of Appeals is expected to take up an adjourned hearing involving requests for variances for the Old Town Hall hotel plan.

Friday: The Town of Huntington Ethics Board will hold its quarterly meeting on Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Room 304 of Huntington Town Hall.
