Student-athlete Christian Spagnuola of Commack has been named a captain of the baseball team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
A senior outfielder, Spagnuola appeared in 33 games last season, including 26 as a starter. He collected 21 hits in 89 at bats for a .256 average. Recording a double, nine runs and 11 RBI, he put up a .351 on-base percentage and a .268 slugging percentage. Defensively, he was perfect on 36 defensive chances, including two outfield assists.
As a junior, Spagnuola hit .222 (24 for 108) in 37 games (34 starts). The Commack High School graduate had six doubles, 21 runs and 14 RBI, with a .351 on-base percentage and a .278 slugging percentage. Swiping a pair of bags, he had a .957 fielding percentage. Spagnuola is a .251 career hitter at RPI, with 57 hits in 227 at bats. He has seven doubles, 36 runs and 27 RBI.Compiling a .378 on-base percentage and a .282 slugging percentage, he also has three steals.
The Engineers went 18-21 last season, including a 10-11 mark in Liberty League play.
