Commemoration, Lights to Honor Veterans

American Legion Post 1244 will host a Veterans Day commemoration on Nov.11 in Greenlawn.

The service will begin at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, at the corner of Pulaski Rd. and Broadway.

Veterans, government officials and members of the public are expected at the ceremony, which has been conducted annually since 1943 by the Greenlawn Post.

Veterans Day is intended to honor all American war veterans. There are around 19 million U.S. veterans as of this year, according to data from the Department of Veterans Affairs, representing less than 10% of the total U.S. adult population.

As part of “Operation Green Light,” Suffolk Couny Legislator Stephanie Bontempi is asking downtown Huntington businesses to display a green light in their windows. The operation is meant to recognize the plight of veterans who are transitioning to civilian life. She will be visiting participating businesses and announcing the details of the initiative.
