Confusion, Frustration on First Day of Expanded Vaccine Program

Residents looking to register for the Covid-19 vaccine ran into jammed phone lines and some confusion Monday.
The state expanded the pool of people eligible for the vaccine as of Monday,  adding making about 3 million more residents eligible. Added were people 75 and up and numerous categories of people identified as essential workers.
Many called the state hotline hours before its announcing availability time, frustrating people looking for vaccines for themselves or elderly relatives.
One site that was listed as providing vaccines said that only frontline medical workers were eligible for the Moderna vaccine, even though the categories were supposed to expand as of Monday.
At 4:02 p.m., the website for reservations at Suffolk County Community College was offline with a message that it had exceeded capacity.
A woman who was eligible even before the expansion managed to get through Monday; the earliest date she was given was May.
One caller was eventually told to call back after he spent more than an hour on hold. “After a while there was a message that said we are having long hold times. Call again. About 6 that message was replaced with a new one saying they can’t take calls now. It referred callers to the website that had referred them to the covid line in the first place. Cool, huh?”
