Coronavirus: Help for Businesses, Unemployed

Updated  2:20 p.m.New York State continues to ask for people with medical experience to step forward. It is also  inviting businesses that want to sell gloves, masks or gowns to fill out a procurement form. Meanwhile, Stop & Shop announced that it was increasing pay by 10 percent for current union hourly workers.

Businesses affected by the Covid-19 crisis are urged to complete the COVID Business Impact Form administered by Suffolk County. The county is also surveying businesses about the impact of the epidemic.

The grocery chain said, “We recognize that our associates are doing extraordinary work to serve our communities during the COVID-19 emergency. Stop & Shop is proud to provide a 10% increase in pay for all current union hourly associates, 2 weeks paid sick leave for those mandated to quarantine and flexible hours to help associates who are managing things like school and childcare facility closures. Spending necessary time away from work because of COVID-19 will not put their jobs at risk. In these times, and always, we are thankful to our associates for all they do in service to our communities.”

The Empire State Development office offers this guide for small businesses during the crisis.

The state Labor Department said that New York hasn’t qualified yet for the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which  implements changes to the federal Family and Medical Leave Act establishing a federal emergency paid leave benefits program for employees taking unpaid leave due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The department said it would post information if the state becomes eligible, and asks that people not call to request information about the act to avoid jamming phone lines.

Who is eligible to file for unemployment

How to file a claim

If you are filing a new unemployment insurance claim, the day you should file is based on the first letter of your last name. If your last name starts with A – F, file your claim on Monday. For last names starting with G – N, file your claim Tuesday. For last names starting with O – Z, file your claim on Wednesday. If you missed your filing day, file your claim on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Filing later in the week will not delay your payments or affect the date of your claim, since all claims are effective on the Monday of the week in which they are filed.
