Coronavirus: Village Elections Postponed; Northport Mayor Declares Emergency

Gov. Cuomo ordered a delay Monday in village elections until the April 28 primary election.

“Our top priority has been keeping New Yorkers safe and stopping the spread of the novel coronavirus,” Cuomo said. “Public health officials have been clear that reducing density is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread, and delaying village elections will help ensure poll workers and voters are not potentially exposed to the virus and at the same time maintain integrity in our election system.”

The election had been scheduled for Wednesday.

Northport Mayor Damon McMullen declared a disaster emergency Monday because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

The declaration allows the mayor, if he chooses:

To suspend competitive bidding on village contracts

To impose a curfew

To prohibit or otherwise control traffic.

The state, county and Town of Huntington all declared states of emergency in recent days, giving the chief executives of each level of government similar authority.
