Total Covid-19 hospitalizations reached 4,835, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo reported Tuesday, up from the previous day’s total of 4,602. Another 74 residents died.
“New York has instituted a number of measures to help prevent hospitals from becoming overwhelmed including a directive to expand capacity by 25 percent,” Cuomo said. “The good news is New York still maintains one of the nation’s lowest infection rates, but everyone must do their part to slow the spread of the virus and stop the uptick in hospitalizations. If we work together and stay New York Tough, we can manage this pandemic until the vaccine is here.”
Suffolk County reported 1,164 new infections, for a total since the epidemic began of 69,024.
Long Island has a lower percentage of ICU beds available compared to the rest of the state.

Meanwhile, Northwell Health has dispatched 12 nurses to Michigan to help battle a surge in Covid-19 cases.
Northwell Health has formed an alliance with Henry Ford Health System for temporary staff sharing to battle the disease.
The intensive-care and medical-surgical nurses were sent at the Michigan system’s request and are assigned to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township.
