With the one-day death toll reaching 799, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Thursday that he will bring more funeral home directors into the state to handle the large number of services needed. The total number of deaths in the state since the COVID-19 epidemic began reached 7,067.
He drew a comparison between what he called the virus as a “silent killer” to the losses felt by New Yorkers in the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Another 10,621 cases were reported in the state, bringing the total to 159,937, and 369 deaths in Suffolk County.
The county also reported the following statistics
- 40,253 COVID-19 tests have been administered as of April 8
- 43.3 percent of those tested were confirmed positive for COVID-19
- 18,803 confirmed cases, at this time

- 1,595 patients are hospitalized (up 10 from April 8),
- 531 of hospitalized patients are in the intensive care unit, an increase of 14 patients from April 8
- There are 3,365 hospital beds and 750 ICU beds in Suffolk County
- In the last 24 hours, 139 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from the hospital
- Suffolk County has opened a COVID-19 testing facility at Huntington High School, 188 Oakwood Road, Huntington. Testing will be by appointment only. Residents who have a fever of 100.5 or higher, severe shortness of breath and a persistent cough, must call 845-553-8030 for an appointment.
- Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci has requested that residents and landscapers refrain from gas-powered and other types of leaf blower use during the Coronavirus pandemic. “We are asking residents and landscapers to refrain from using gas-powered and electric-powered leaf-blowers during the remainder of the Coronavirus pandemic for the purposes of public health and safety,” said Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci. “We are also asking landscapers to adhere to social distancing protocols and avoid any type of transportation or service that violates these protocols.”
