Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Tuesday that on Sunday, the first day of eligibility for New Yorkers with medical conditions, more than a quarter of a million vaccination appointments were made at state-run mass vaccination sites–the largest single-day registration total since vaccinations began.
He said that 250,924 New Yorkers made appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine, at a rate of nearly 10,000 per hour. Additionally, 1,645,941 screenings were conducted on the state’s ‘Am I Eligible‘ tool on Sunday.
As of Tuesday morning, appointments are booked through April 16 at state-run mass vaccination sites, with the only exceptions being:
- New York State Fair – Booked through March 16
- SUNY Potsdam – Booked through April 1
- Rochester Dome – Booked through April 4
- SUNY Stony Brook – Booked through April 13
Social media posts are filled with frustration, advice and tips on getting vaccination appointments as the demand outstrips the supply. Groups such as New York/Connecticut Vaccine Hunters, and individuals, such as Michelle Troiano, continue to try to help individuals who can’t navigate the patchwork of online sites to get signed on, while others are busy sharing links to appointments that have supposedly opened up.
Nursing Home Controversy
State legislators and others continue to demand an explanation and better information about the scope of Covid-19 nursing home deaths, with Cuomo saying Monday that his administration had erred by failing to be more transparent. An issue is how deaths of nursing home patients were counted and whether they were misattributed to hospitals or other locations, thus lowering the number of nursing home deaths that occurred since last March when Cuomo ordered nursing homes to take in Covid-19 patients transferred from hospitals.
Infection Rate
Cuomo also said that the state’s 7-day average COVID-19 positivity rate dropped to 3.71 percent, the lowest since Nov. 28.
Long Island’s infection rate as of Monday was 4.58 percent, with Suffolk reporting 526 new infections, and 9 deaths.
