Updated: New York State is lifting some limits related to the Covid-19 epidemic, including on the number of people who can gather together, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Wednesday.
Long Island continues to report the state’s highest infection rate, at 4.18 percent, with the Mid-Hudson region second at 4.14.
Cuomo is under fire from multiple directions, accusations of sexual harassment, accusations of bullying other political officials, and complaints about his handling of data related to Covid-19 deaths in nursing homes. On Wednesday, he apologized for his behavior and said he was embarrassed, but said he would not resign, as U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice and others have urged.
“I have learned from what has been an incredibly difficult situation for me as well as other people,” Cuomo said. “I have learned an important lesson. I am sorry. I am sorry for whatever pain I have caused anyone. I never intended it.”
Cuomo announced that beginning April 2, event, arts and entertainment venues can reopen at 33 percent capacity, up to 100 people indoors and up to 200 people outdoors. If all attendees present proof of negative test prior to entry, capacity can increase up to 150 people indoors and up to 500 people outdoors. Social distancing and face coverings will be required by all attendees, as well as adherence to all applicable Department of Health guidance.
Other changes:
- Domestic travelers to New York State who have been vaccinated no longer have to quarantine or test out within 90 days of their full vaccination.
- The one-shot Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine has arrived on Long Island, joining Moderna and Pfizer vaccines already being administered.
- The state Legislature could take up placing limits on Cuomo’s emergency powers by Friday. He was granted those powers last year, as the epidemic spread across New York, and covered topics from election schedules to school closings and various health rules.
