Cuthbertson to Seek Suffolk Legislative Seat

Huntington Councilman Mark Cuthbertson will run for the Suffolk County Legislature in the fall instead of seeking re-election to the Town Board.

The Democrat, who announced the race Tuesday afternoon, has served on the board since 1998, making him the most senior member. The decision was first reported by Newsday.

“It has been a distinct honor and privilege to serve Huntington as a member of the Town Board,” Cuthbertson said. “I believe my time has been served well as a councilman and I welcome new challenges as a member of the Suffolk Legislature. I am truly grateful for the trust the residents of Huntington have instilled in me.”

He is seeking the 18th Legislative District seat, currently held by Dr. William Spencer, who was arrested in October  when police said he attempted to trade drugs for sex.

Suffolk County Democratic Chairman Richard Schaffer said, “Councilman Mark Cuthbertson has been consistently reelected to the Huntington Town Council because of his record delivering for the families of Huntington. We’re excited to work with Mark to keep our Democratic Majority in the Legislature so he can continue working to improve the lives of Suffolk County families.”

County Executive Steve Bellone added, “As County Executive, I’ve partnered with Councilman Cuthbertson to create real solutions that positively impact all Suffolk residents – from clean water infrastructure projects to keep our drinking water and waterways clean to finding ways to streamline county and town services to protect taxpayer dollars. I look forward to working with Mark as a legislator to keep fighting for Suffolk.”
