Lou D’Amaro, who represented parts of Huntington for 12 years as a Suffolk County legislator, told Newsday Thursday that he will run for the State Senate against incumbent Phil Boyle.
D’Amaro, whose run as a legislator ended in January because of term limits, referred to Republican Boyle’s failed attempt to become Suffolk County sheriff, Newsday said, saying, “He obviously has shown interest in going to other places, so I’m interested in helping send him on his way.”
In the last four years of his tenure as a legislator, he served as chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee. Before that, he was chairman of the Legislature’s Ways and Means Committee and vice chairman of the Environment, Planning and Agriculture Committee. He also served on several other legislative committees including the Education & Information Technology Committee and the Human Services Committee.
In January, he was succeeded as 17th District legislator by Tom Donnelly.
D’Amaro lives in North Babylon. He is an attorney with Rivkin Radler.
The Republicans hold a one-vote advantage in the State Senate.
