Democrats Pick Sanin to Run for Supervisor

Democrats have chosen Rebecca Sanin, president and chief executive of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, to run for Huntington town supervisor in the fall.

Sanin, 42, has been active for years in town and county politics and community issues, including work to promote local participation in the US Census and pushing to prevent the closing of the then-Jack Abrams Intermediate School in 2010. Before taking leadership of the council, she was an assistant deputy county executive in the administration of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

“I’m super excited to run for this position,” Sanin said Wednesday. “I am doing it because for a lot of reasons, but largely because I want to return the Town of Huntington to be a place of good government where employees can fee secure and where  people can feel the town works for them and the town can be a place of innovation and opportunity.”

She is seeking to replace Supervisor Chad Lupinacci, who is in his first term and could face a challenge from Town Councilman Gene Cook, who is expected to announce his plans next week.
Lupinacci is caught up in a sexual harassment lawsuit brought by a former aide from his term in the State Assembly.  Cook recently joined the Republican Party after being elected to the Town Board as a member of the Independence Party.
Sanin said she plans “to bring the entirety of the township into the process of good government. It is the supervisor’s responsibility to invest in creative solutions and to be a leader when businesses are hurting and families are struggling during the greatest public health crisis of our time.”
Sanin said her campaign “will be about listening to residents and how Covid has impacted their lives, and how the Town of Huntington could better serve them.”

She has lived for 15 years in Huntington Station with her family.

  1. When will Rebecca have meetings with the public to give her positions on goals and needs of Huntington, NY. Not fund raising but meetings for the public. All I hear from all candidates are generalized advertising jargon for popular appeal rather than more detailed objectives.
