New York State will hold a special election April 28 to fill the assembly seat for the 12th legislative district, which encompasses the greater Northport community and includes parts of three towns:  Huntington, Islip and Babylon.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the special election on Feb. 10 and on Saturday, Suffolk County Democrats selected Michael Marcantonio as their nominee.

Marcantonio, a lawyer, said he is honored and grateful for the support.

“I begin this campaign with excitement and determination as we have big issues to tackle, including the corrosive effects of LIPA’s failures on the residents of the 12th assembly district,” Marcantonio stated in a press release announcing the campaign.  “I am focused on building a large grassroots coalition to send a message that we are in this fight together.”

Marcantonio, born and raised in Northport, ran for the seat in 2018, largely on the LIPA issue, but was disqualified because he registered to vote and voted in Durham, North Carolina, while a law student at Duke University in the 2012 and 2014 elections. New York State requires five-year residency to qualify for a position on the ballot.

The seat has been vacant since Jan. 1, when Andrew Raia, who represented the district for 16 years, left office to serve as Huntington’s town clerk.

The Suffolk County GOP spokesperson said that Keith Brown will represent the Republican party in the election.
