Deputy Named to Engineering Department After Cuthbertson Tries Title Swap

He didn’t succeed, but Huntington Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson did his best Tuesday night to rearrange the hierarchy in the town’s engineering services department.

When the board took up the appointment of James J. Ahrens as deputy director of engineering services for the town, Cuthbertson objected. He suggested Ahrens be named director and current director Daniel Martin become deputy. Councilwoman Joan Cergol agreed but that idea was rejected by  Supervisor Chad Lupinacci and Councilmen Edmund Smyth and Gene Cook. The board then approved Ahrens’ appointment.

“I offered the amendment to appoint Mr. Ahrens as the director because I believe it would be best for the Town to have a professional engineer as the head of the department,” Cuthbertson said. “He has vast experience in the engineering field.”

Ahrens is an engineer; Martin is a retired Court of Claims judge who previously served as deputy town attorney, appointed in January 2018.
