Stern Supports Prohibiting Offshore Drilling on Coastlines

Assemblyman Steve Stern announced that he co-sponsored a bill that will prohibit the use of state-owned underwater coastal lands for oil and natural gas drilling along New York’s coastlines.

The bill, which was passed in February, also would prevent the state from authorizing leases that would increase oil or natural gas production from federal waters, as well as prohibit the development of infrastructure that is associated with exploration or production of oil or natural gas.

Stern, D-Huntington, said, “Our Long Island beaches and waterways are vital to our local economy, our precious environment and our quality of life. I will always work hard to protect our waterways for now and for generations to come.”

Although drilling off of New York’s Atlantic Coast has been off limits for decades, some of the state’s laws that regulated oil and natural gas drilling have not been making other progress. This legislation would correct this oversight and maintain New York’s coastal management practices to ensure the protection of endangered and threatened species, as well as the state’s recreational and commercial fishing industries.
