Earth Day Features Family Day, Cleanup and Recycling Poster Contest

Huntington residents will be celebrating Huntington Family Earth Day at Manor Farm Saturday, cosponsored by council members Joan Cergol and Sal Ferro,  Covanta and Starflower Experiences.

Events include a marine touch tank, supplied by Cornell Cooperative Extension, arts and crafts, garden planting, and face painting. There will also be demonstrations of composting, bee-keeping, and water chemistry, and shed the med and paper shredding services will also be offered.

Activities run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 

On Sunday, the Greenlawn Civic Association is sponsoring a community cleanup and celebration at Pickle Park, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The celebration will include a story time, sing-along and crafts.

 

And through April, Supervisor Ed Smyth and Covanta Huntington are sponsoring a recycling-themed poster contest for students grades 1-8.
Smyth said, “The Town of Huntington is putting a renewed focus on the benefits of recycling to help reduce the amount of waste we produce. This at-home activity will provide students with the chance to reflect on the importance of protecting our planet while flexing their creative muscles.”
  • Judging will be in two age categories: Grades 1-4 and 5-8.

    • SCHOOL PRIZES:
      • $500.00 Gift Certificates to each of the two schools with the first-place winners.
    • STUDENT PRIZES:
      • 1st place – Lenovo Tablets to the 1st place winners from each age category.
      • 2nd place – $75.00 Barnes & Noble Gift Certificates to the 2nd place winners from each age category.
      • 3rd place – $50.00 Barnes & Noble Gift Certificates to the 3rd place winners from each age category.
