Election 2024: 1st District Fighting; Upcoming Fundraisers

With John Avlon having locked up most of the local Democratic committees’ official endorsements, his party rival, Nancy Goroff  continues to swing away at US Rep. Nick LaLota in her effort to unseat the first-term congressman. Goroff has criticized the 1st District Republican on police funding and the cap on the deduction of property taxes, saying “Nick is either incompetent or a liar.” LaLota has pushed back, saying Goroff “has shamelessly spread lies and misinformation about my voting record, legislative actions, and core values.”

LaLota also jabbed Avlon, the former CNN figure.  “His recent decision to abandon his deep-seated Manhattan roots and run for Congress in Suffolk County from his Hamptons summer home is a prime example of someone more interested in furthering their agenda than genuinely serving a community they know and have a deep connection with.”

LaLota lives in Amityville, outside the 1st District lines–a member of Congress does not have to live in the district–but grew up on Long Island, and attended St. Anthony’s High School.

Republicans and some Goroff supporters complain that Avlon has little to no commitment to Suffolk County, saying that his roots are in New York City, where he was born and eventually became a speechwriter for then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

LaLota earned a thank you from the Shelter Island Reporter for his vote to support aid to Ukraine, which continues to try to fight off a Russian invasion.
