Fire Departments Extinguish Fire on Northport Power Plant Roof

Firefighters from Northport and several other departments battled a blaze on the roof of the Northport power plant early Saturday morning.
Northport fire chief Kenneth Sheridan said that firefighters had to climb 20 stories to put out the blaze. He said there were no injuries but firefighters were checked for heat and other problems after the fire at unit 1 was extinguished. “I’m sure some of them have sore muscles today” after having to haul themselves and equipment up interior stairwells to the roof in high heat and humidity.

The fire was out by about 7:30 a.m. and the case turned over to the town of Huntington’s fire marshal and the Suffolk County Police arson squad.
