Gift Cards Sought for Victims of East Northport Fire

Local groups assisting families displaced by a fire in East Northport Saturday are requesting donations of gift cards.

The best way to help the fire victims is by donating gift cards that can be used to purchase critical necessities such as food, gas, toiletries and baby supplies, according to the Health & Welfare Council, an umbrella organization of health and human service agencies on Long Island.

Gift cards solve a problem of a lack of storage for donated items, Rebecca Sanin of the Council said. “One of the things that we know from experience is how challenging donations management can be. Everyone wants to help-and especially in our community-there is a sense of generosity in crisis.”

More than 100 people were displaced, the East Northport Fire Department said.

Two firefighters were injured fighting the blaze, with approximately 100 emergency personnel from numerous agencies operating at the scene, as well as fire police, rehab/support units and the Cyanide Response Team provided by Paramedics from the Dix Hills Fire Department, Greenlawn Fire Department and Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Mutual aid was provided by Northport, Commack, Greenlawn, Kings Park, Centerport, Dix Hills, and Huntington Manor Fire Departments.

The Huntington Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
