Food, Household Good Drives This Weekend

Island Harvest and PSEG Long Island will be collecting donations of food, personal care items and pet food Friday  as part of Hunger Action Day.

PSEG-LI’s  summer-long community initiative is aimed at collecting the equivalent of 21,000 meals at six events across Long Island from July through September. Friday’s collection runs from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Stop & Shop, 1100 Jericho Turnpike.

The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians is having its second annual happy hour and food drive Friday at Six Harbors, from 5 to 9 p.m. Donations of non-perishable food and personal care items will be accepted at the door.

Also taking donations Saturday are Helping Hand Rescue Mission and the Huntington Assembly of God, which are working together for Community Share Day. Donations of food, clean used clothing, household goods, toys and other items are welcome between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the church, 1700 New York Ave., Huntington Station. Register to participate.

Gov. Kathy Hochul  announced Thursday that  state landmarks will be lit in orange on Hunger Action Day, which takes place on Friday to raise awareness of the issue and to pledge New York’s continued commitment to combat hunger in our communities. Food banks statewide will also honor the month with a series of food distributions, food drives and more, giving New Yorkers an opportunity to get involved.

The governor also said that all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for September. Hochul also directed the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, which administers SNAP in New York State, to continue working with the federal government to ensure these supplemental benefits will reach households in need throughout the fall.
