For New Year’s Day, a Nature Hike and a Polar Bear Swim

If you don’t use up all your energy New Year’s Eve but are looking for something to do Wednesday to start the new year right, consider a hike at the Cold Spring Harbor Lab’s Fish Hatchery and Aquarium.

They invite you to come  learn about Long Island winter habitats and enjoy a guided nature hike.  Hikes are family friendly. Be sure to dress weather appropriate.  Comfortable hiking shoes are recommended.  Must be able to hike a moderate nature trail for approximately 1/2 mile.  Pre-registration required. 11 a.m.-noon. Limited spaces available.  Call 516 693 6768.

If you prefer watching others getting a workout, Boy Scout Troop 410 of Northport will repeat its 11th annual polar bear swim Wednesday, noon, at Steers Beach. It’s a fundraiser, so you can be virtuous and stay warm by watching and donating to the Northport Food Pantry. Last spring, the troop donated $6,500 to the pantry.
