Full Agenda for Tuesday’s Town Board Meeting

Bird watchers and opponents of the Long Island Power Authority tax lawsuit are among those expected at Tuesday’s Town Board meeting.

The Bald Eagles of Centerport Facebook group plans to be on hand as the board considers a proposal that would add restrictions on stopping along the east side of Centershore Road. Fans of the eagle pair, who devote considerable time to watching and photographing the birds, are worried about their ability to see the birds as they soar out of the nest and over the pond. The town said it had received an email about distracted driving caused by those gathering to watch the birds. “There was also a March 9th auto collision, which illustrates the road safety issue,” the town said. “The bald eagle attraction coupled with the narrow road and little to no shoulder area presents traffic safety concerns. In the vicinity of the gazebo, which sits on Town property along the east side of Centershore Road, there have been an excessive amount of vehicles parking along the east side of Centershore Road, which has created undesirable conditions as the shoulder width is insufficient to safely accommodate vehicular parking.”

The eagle watchers say the March crash was caused by a driver distracted by a line of waterfowl crossing the road, not by photographers or fans gawking at the eagles.

LIPA opponents plan to urge the Town Board to keep fighting the utility’s efforts to drastically lower its taxes. That lawsuit, which continues in this week in State Supreme Court, centers on LIPA claims that the plant has been overassessed for years. Residents, particularly those in the Northport-East Northport school district, fear a huge increase in their taxes if LIPA prevails.

This is the Town Board meeting agenda as posted Friday.
