Fundraiser for Teacher Severely Injured in Fall at Home

A Dix Hills man who was severely injured in  a fall in front of his house has undergone multiple surgeries, but his family says he is likely paralyzed for life.

Gerry Gianutsos, 46, who teaches music in Queens, slipped and hit his head while getting his three  kids ready to go sledding on Feb. 13.

A relative turned to Facebook, seeking to raise $125,000 for medical expenses and to adapt his home for a wheelchair, install a ramp and make other adjustments. He shares the home with his wife, Kristi, and three children, ages 10, 7, and 5.

Danielle Gonzalez,  who is Kristi Gianutsos’  sister, said on her GoFundMe page, “We are heartbroken for their children and conversations they will have in the coming weeks to explain to the children that there will be a new “normal” for their daddy.”

Gianutsos, who teaches at  PS/IS 78Q in Hunters Point, is known to the students as Mr. G.

The GoFundMe campaign has raised $79,965 as of midday Sunday.
