Gates Foundation Matching Donations for School Projects

Huntington area teachers looking to add extra equipment or services to their classrooms can get a boost from Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the billionaire is offering to match funds donated through Donors Choose, matching with an extra 50 percent boost, meaning a donation of $20 will bring an extra $10 from Gates. The matching program runs Tuesday only.

Teachers from around Huntington have posted a wide variety of projects and plans on DonorsChoose.org that they’re hoping to get funded, from a math academic intervention teacher at Countrywood Primary School  looking to add math materials to her lineup to the creation of a lending library for second and third graders at Washington Primary. Other projects include buying Chrome books for a classroom at Walt Whitman High School and a cow-eye dissection project at Maplewood.

Gates sent out word about his donations through his emailed GatesNotes newsletter, which often addresses educational issues.
