Opinion: Honoring Veterans With Hall of Fame

Millions of men and women serve our country selflessly, day after day, in wars and in peacetime, to ensure our freedoms and protection. Too often these heroes return home and are not given the recognition they deserve. As elected officials, we have the unique pleasure of being able to recognize and honor these veterans, the unsung heroes of our community, in ways both big and small.

Each year the New York State Senate honors noteworthy veterans from across our community whose outstanding service on behalf of their communities makes them deserving of special recognition. I will be honoring these veterans at my first annual ‘Veterans Hall of Fame’ awards ceremony. This ceremony will be held in mid-May and will honor and recognize exceptional veterans who have distinguished them both in military and civilian life.

These brave men and women served our country with distinction. The ceremony is one small way in which we can step back, acknowledge their sacrifice, and thank them for their service. I am currently accepting nominations for the Veterans Hall of Fame. If you know of an outstanding veteran, please contact my office to nominate them. Nominations can be mailed or emailed to 99-111 South Street Oyster Bay, NY 11771 or [email protected]. Nominations must be received by April 26th.

Lastly, let us all take a moment to remember the three Marines killed in Afghanistan this week. Cpl. Robert A. Hendriks of Locust Valley, Staff Sgt. Christopher A. Slutman of Yonkers, and Sgt. Benjamin S. Hines of Pennsylvania. Their bravery and contribution to the defense of our country will not be forgotten. May they rest in peace.
