Groups Plan New Protest Against Separation of Families at Border

A coalition of religious organizations, political activists and others from the Huntington area are planning to protest June 30 against the separation of children from parents seeking asylum or attempting to enter the country without documentation.

President Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order ending family separations at the U.S.-Mexico border.  But he said the order does not alter the “zero tolerance” policy that the administration established in April that led to the separation of children from parents.

The Huntington event is part of a national protest against the policy.

“We demand an end to the indefinite detention of children and families that criminalizes parents seeking safety for their children,” the coalition said. “We demand accountability for the horrors that this brutal policy has caused. We cannot be silent during these dark times that will surely be a scar upon our nation’s history. We must stand up and speak out.”

Sponsoring groups include LIICAH, TWWLI, ATLI, Suffolk Progressives, LI Activists, NY Chapter 2 American Academy of Pediatrics, Show Up Long Island, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Huntington, Long Island Progressive Coalition,TASC, Resist and Replace, Pantsuit Nation LI, Get2Work, WDN, Raising Voices, Make The Road, LINC, Huntington Rapid Response Network, Huntington Assembly of God, Latinos Unidos de Long Island, Iglesia Luz de Salvacion, Hombres de Palabra NY, The Interfaith Clergy Council of Syosset, Woodbury, and Surrounding areas, Congregation Simchat Halev, and Organize-Plan-Act and other co-sponsors.

Several of the same organizations protested last week in Huntington.

The protest is set for 1 p.m. at the intersection of Jericho Turnpike and Route 110.
